In order to be a successful sales negotiator you need to be able to walk away with the lowest prices when you engage in a negotiation. As you might suspect, the key is how you get there. Having multiple tactics that you can use is your ticket to success. The Krunch tactic is a classic tool that every sales negotiator needs to know how to use — and how to defend against.

How To Use The Krunch Tactic

So I can hear you asking “what is this krunch tactic thing and how I can I put it to use for me?” Simply put, the krunch tactic is a negotiating method that a buyer can use to get a lower price out of a seller.

Here’s how it works. The buyer will ask several sellers to quote him a price on what he wants to buy. Once he collects several prices, he then goes back to everyone that he collected a price from and tells them that their price is too high, could they take another look and come back with a lower price?

Note that the subtlety here is that the buyer is even going back to the seller who did provide the lowest price and he’s asking them to provide an even lower price also. This technique is so fiendishly powerful because none of the sellers knows what the other seller’s price is and so they all assume that everyone else has quoted a lower price than they did.

The krunch tactic plays on the insecurity of sellers worldwide. Every salesperson believes that the price that they are quoting is too high and that no buyer will ever make a purchase at that price. When the buyer comes back and tells them that their price is too high, this just serves to confirm what they had always feared: they are charging too much for their product.

How To Defend Against The Krunch Tactic

From a negotiating perspective, it would sure seem as though nobody would ever want to find themselves in the role of seller in a negotiating situation. However, that’s not the case.

Smart sellers come to know when the other side of the table is a krunch tactic user. If they know this going into a sales negotiation, then they can prepare themselves for it by simply boosting their initial offer. Realizing that they are going to be asked to come down in price, they simply start higher so that they’ll still end up where they want to be in the end.

In the case that a buyer gets his or her way by using the krunch tactic, the seller still has other options that they can use. These include changing what gets delivered as part of the deal. The quality of what is being bought can go down, the quantity that is offered can be decreased, and when it actually gets delivered can be stretched out to better fit with the seller’s schedule.

Smart sellers don’t just roll over when the buyer starts to apply the krunch tactic. Instead, they start to ask questions. They probe to find out what the correct price is from the buyers point-of-view. They also try to determine why the buyer thinks that they should lower their price – aren’t you offering higher quality, better terms, etc.?

What All Of This Means For You

In sales negotiations, the krunch tactic is a classic negotiating tactic that is used by buyers to get sellers to lower their prices. It’s very simple to use and yet at the same time it is very effective.

To use the krunch tactic a buyer simply has to collect bids from multiple sellers and then turn around and go back to them to inform them that their bids were too high and that they need to submit a new bid with a lower price. Sellers are often all too willing to comply.

Sellers quickly learn when a buyer is using this tactic and can boost their initial offer to counter this tactic. In the end, the krunch tactic is only effective if you use it when it best suits the negotiating circumstances – when you absolutely must have a lower price from the sellers. Knowing how to use more negotiating tactics like the kruch tactic will make you a better sales negotiator.

Everyone’s heard about the web site Ebay right? That’s where you can go to auction off any junk that you don’t want to have lying around your place any more or where you can go to purchase a GI Joe doll that you remember from your childhood (in its original box!) It turns out that the success of Ebay holds a number of lessons that sales negotiators should learn from…

Maybe We’ve Got This Auction Thing Backwards?

When it comes to conducting a sales negotiation, we generally can’t run an auction to find the best deal. This just isn’t a good way to work out all of the details that go along with striking a good deal.

A much better way of getting a good deal is to use what professional negotiators like to call “a reverse auction”. I like to call this technique “shopping around”.

What Is A Reverse Auction?

In a traditional auction, what’s being bought is presented and then people proceed to bid on it. Everyone gets to see what everyone else is offering. Whomever offers the highest amount of money wins the auction and gets to purchase the item at the highest amount that they stated that they’d be willing to pay.

In a reverse auction, things are run a bit differently. This negotiating technique requires that the buyer approach each potential bidder separately and ask them for a bid. Upon getting an offer from each of them, the buyer now has both a range of prices and a collection of features to choose from.

Things aren’t over yet, they are just getting started. Now the buyer can go back to each one of the bidders and state that they can get a better deal from another bidder and ask them if they’d be willing to lower their price / increase what they are offering.

You can see where this is going now. The buyer keeps having separate discussions with each of the potential bidders and telling them what the current lowest offer is. This is done in order to motivate them to lower their offer in order to stay in the game.

Ultimately, the bidders will reach a price point that they are unwilling to go beneath – effectively this is their lowest price. Once this happens, the buyer will need to make a decision about which offer best meets their needs.

The Danger Of Using A Reverse Auction

Hopefully you can see just how powerful a reverse auction can be. The bidders have so little information that they end up bidding against themselves in many cases.

However, you can also imagine how a bidder must feel after a reverse auction is overworn out and potentially angry. Sure they got the deal, but is it a good deal for them to get?

The reason that this matters to you is that if you need to make any changes to the deal that you’ve reached with the winning bidder, they’ll permit the changes, but they’ll attempt to reclaim some of their lost profits by increasing their price for the change.

What All Of This Means For You

Ebay is one of the most successful Internet companies in existence for a very good reason. They provide their customers with an opportunity to participate in auctions for just about every product imaginable. Professional negotiators need to realize just how powerful a technique an auction is, and start to use the reverse auction tactic.

The reverse auction tactic requires the buyer to play bidders off against each other in order to get the lowest price. The danger in doing this is that this may leave the winner angry and wanting to regain lost profits if any changes are needed.

A sales negotiator needs to have many different tactics that can be used when needed during a sales negotiation. The reverse auction tactic is one of these. Just be careful when you decided to use it – with great power comes great responsibility…

In the world of negotiating, the actual process of negotiating is very much an art. In order to be good at it, a master sales negotiator needs to have a complete collection of negotiating tactics at his or her disposal. Not every negotiation will call for every tactic to be used, but as any auto mechanic can tell you, having the right tool for the job can make your life a lot easier.

Empty Concessions Make The Perfect Gift

As a negotiator you will be expected to make concessions to the other side of the table during the negotiation in order to keep making progress towards an eventual deal. However, sometimes you may find yourself in a bind – they want a lower price and you can’t go any lower than you already are.

It is in cases like this that empty concessions can come in quite handy. Ultimately, the value of any given concession is determined by how the side that is getting it views it. This means that by identifying a negotiation point that means very little to you, but which means a great deal to the to the other side of the table, you will have found the perfect empty concession.

When you find yourself backed into a negotiating corner, an empty concession is exactly the kind of tool that you can use to increase the other side’s level of satisfaction without having to give in on a point that is important to you.

Littering Really Isn’t All That Bad

In some negotiations, it can seem as though the other side of the table holds all of the cards – you are at their mercy. However, this is never the case. The concept of “littering on their lawn” simply means that you have the ability to make statements that will cause them to pause and realize that what you are offering them has more value than they had originally thought.

The following four examples show how negotiating litter can be made to work for you:

  • Value: pointing out to the other side that yes, they could strike a deal with another company for a lower price; however, they would end up getting less value from the deal for the following reasons…
  • The Price Is Right: sitting down with the other side and reviewing both your costs and your prices can quickly show them that you really are making a reasonable amount of money on this deal – not too much, not too little.
  • We’re Different: point out why comparing your offer to another firm’s offer is not really an apples-to-apples comparison. Show that your firm actually provides many additional services.
  • Total Cost: just focusing on the price of the item being bought or sold can be misleading. Taking the time to discuss all of the costs of the deal, both before and after the sale, can show that your total costs are lower than the competition.

What All Of This Means For You

Nobody is ever born a top-notch sales negotiator. Instead, we all improve a little bit during every negotiation that we are involved in. A key part of this improvement is making sure that we know all of the tactics that we’ll need.

Concessions that mean very little to you, but which mean a great deal to the other side of the table are a fantastic tool to use when you find yourself backed into a corner. Casting doubt in the minds of the other side by littering on their carefully planned reasoning can cause the other side to become willing to reach a deal much quicker.

Recently I was talking with some friends of mine who are planning on using the current depressed real estate market to “trade up” and get a bigger / better house. They were lamenting the fact that this process was going to require them to negotiate with the sellers. They had come to me because they knew that I teach others how to use negotiation to quickly close bigger deals.

What they wanted to do was use that “win-win” technique that they had heard others talking about and they wanted me to teach them how. Sigh. Nothing in life is ever as easy as it seems, but from this experience I thought there were a few key points that you might be interested in…

The Negotiating Pizza

When I started talking with my friends about the house that they wanted to buy, I kicked off the conversation by asking them what they wanted to get out of the negotiations that they knew would be required. They said that price meant everything to them – they could only afford to spend so much money.

Dear reader, clearly we were starting off on the wrong foot. The problem is that my friends were looking at the negotiations for the house that they wanted as a pizza. Assuming that that pizza had been cut into 10 slices, they wanted to make sure that they came out of the negotiations with at least 6 pieces and not 4 pieces. This is not win-win negotiating.

In their quest to get the house that they wanted at the lowest possible price, my friends were approaching the negotiations as a contest – a contest that would have a clear winner and a clear loser. No wonder they were nervous!

A Better Negotiating Pizza

Win-win negotiating has everything to do with how both sides of the table feel after the negotiators are done. If somebody feels as though they’ve come away with less pizza than the other side, then it wasn’t a win-win discussion.

What you need to do is to make the pizza BIGGER. That way it doesn’t become a matter of who gets how many pieces, because both sides actually walk away with more pizza.

In working with my house buying friends, I asked them where they had some flexibility – what else could we add to the negotiations besides just price. It turns out that they were flexible on when they could take possession – they didn’t need to move in immediately. Also, my friends are handy fixer-uppers and so they were willing to make changes to the house – the current owners didn’t have to actually have the work done.

Final Thoughts

In the end, these two additional negotiating points were what allowed my friends to successfully close the deal. The current owners had not yet picked where they wanted to move to so having more time to get out of the house was very important to them. Additionally, they had a lot of fancy furniture that they didn’t want to have to worry about covering while the house was being painted, etc. My friends got the house for a fair price and everyone went away with more than enough pizza.

Sales negotiators who learn how to make the pizza bigger for both sides of the table will be able to close better deals and close them quicker.

Introducing Brian Dietmeyer

Brian Dietmeyer is the President / CEO of a company called Think! that offers business-to-business negotiation training. He’s also written a book called Strategic Negotiation: A Breakthrough Four-Step Process for Effective Business Negotiation.

Awhile ago Brian sat down with the folks over at SellingPower magazine and went over the fundamental things that we all have to remember when we start a sales negotiation. He does a pretty good job of hitting most of the bases.

The video included below (sorry RSS readers, I think that you’re going to have to visit the blog to see the video) is only about 5 minutes long. Brian does a good job of pointing out three things:

  • How to reach an agreement with someone who is NOT an agreeable person.
  • The importance of facts and data in any sales negotiation.
  • The role of greed & fear in a sales negotiation.

Brian is, of course, trying to sell himself, his company, and his book but he only does this briefly about halfway through the video – it’s still a good video.
