Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, there are four common sales negotiation mistakes that even really smart people make all the time. Are you making any of them?

The 4 Deadly Sins Of Sales Negotiations

It turns out that the reason that so many sales negotiations turn out poorly for negotiators is because they enter into the negotiations with the wrong state of mind. Instead of preparing for the negotiation, they go in with a “let’s hope for the best” type of mindset. How can they possibly hope to do well?

Sales negotiators who have this type of mind set more often than not don’t do well during a negotiation. They fall prey to the four deadly sins of sales negotiations:

  1. No plan
  2. Bad agreements
  3. Poor reading skills
  4. No follow up

Your Plan Is That You Have No Plan!

While I worked for Siemens, there was a large French-Canadian director who would occasionally explode in strategy meetings and shout at people that “Your Plan Is That You Have No Plan!” In a sales negotiation, this is often the case when people enter into the negotiation without a plan.

Instead of a plan, they have hope. Hope that things will go well. That they won’t make too many mistakes. That the other side will make mistakes. A sales negotiation is a journey, not a destination. You need to have a plan (concessions, demands, questions, schedules, etc.) for how you are going to get to where you want to go.

Agreement Without Clarity

During everyday conversations with friends and coworkers, we all have a tendency to agree to things that we may not have a full understanding of. This is a polite way of keeping the conversation going even when we may not fully grasp what they are saying – we figure that we can pick it up later on.

This same type of behavior during a sales negotiation can be disastrous. If you don’t take the time to fully understand what you are agreeing to, you may find yourself quickly in a bad situation. Call for a break, take a time out, or ask the other side of the table to better explain something before you agree to it.

Doing A Poor Job Of Reading

Looking the other side in the eye and signing a contract with a big flourish sure can make a strong impression – that you don’t have any idea what you are really signing. I learned a long time ago that he who takes the notes, ultimately controls how a meeting turns out. The same goes for sales negotiations – it really doesn’t matter what you THINK you’ve agreed to, it’s the words that make it onto the paper that really matter. Take the time to read them!

Follow Up, Follow Up, Follow Up!

It’s too easy to think that a sales negotiation is over and done with once the last paper has been signed and the handshakes have been exchanged. However, both sides of the table have a responsibility to follow up and make sure that the agreement is being executed by both sides. Not only is this a critical part of doing business, it can have a big impact on any future negotiations between the two sides.

Final Thoughts

A long time ago I took a scuba diving class. One of the key lessons that they taught in that class was the simple phrase “Plan your dive, dive your plan.” The same thing can be said about sales negotiations: you need to have a plan and you need to follow it if you want to have any chance of being successful.

We now know what can happen if you don’t have a plan: you’ll end up skipping ove important steps like agreeing to things that aren’t clear, not reading things that you are signing, and not following up after the deal is done. Remembering to plan your negotiations ahead of time and avoiding the 4 deadly sins of sales negotiations will allow you to close better deals and close them quicker.

Wouldn’t it be great if the best sales negotiators in the world could drop by our place and sit down with us for awhile to share what they’ve learned? If you knew that they were coming, what questions would you ask them?

We’ve already talked about some of the things that master sales negotiators could teach us, and we’ve covered some of the secrets that they use to walk away with the results that they wanted.

However, let’s dive deeper – if we only had a few minutes to talk with a master sales negotiator, what would they want to share with us?

Buyers Need To Move Slower Than Sellers

Our sales negotiations are more often than not a game of back-and-forth: offers are followed by counteroffers which are then themselves countered. One thing that too many of us overlook is that the buyer’s first counter offer is one of the most important events in a sales negotiation.

Before the buyer makes a counteroffer, the buyer has no idea if there is any chance of striking a deal. The more the buyer goes on talking and doesn’t make a counteroffer, the greater the doubt in the seller will be. In fact, he/she may end up lowering their price just to get the buyer to make a counteroffer in the first place.

Learn To Say “Yes” Slooooowly

Sometimes, no matter what side of the table you are on, you’ll be presented with  a deal that is perfect just the way it stands. The price is right, the terms are good, and it meets your schedule. You are busy and have lots of other things to do – you want to say “yes” and move on to other things.

However, the master sales negotiators would caution you against doing this. It’s not that there is anything wrong with the deal, it’s just that you are going to leave the other side with a bad feeling about the negotiation. They are forever going to be filled with doubts about the deal (and they may do a poor job of keeping their part of the deal). However, if you say “no” a few times or at least take you time saying “yes”, then they will feel as though they “earned” the final outcome and this will, surprisingly, leave them feeling more satisfied.

Breakdowns – Good For Buyers, Bad For Sellers

Most of the time, the deal that we’re negotiating can be quite complex. In these cases it’s natural for the buyer to request a breakdown of the prices involved. This is an excellent way to get some insight into the seller’s costs.

On the other hand, providing such information is going to allow a buyer to do a better job of negotiating a lower price so sellers should work hard to not have to provide them. This can be impossible if they ask for it at point blank; however, trying to avoid ever getting into that situation is always a good plan.

Final Thoughts

As we’ve said before, the art of good sales negotiating does not rely on one single skill. Rather there are literally 1,000s of small details that if you can get them right, then you’ll turn into a force to be reckoned with during any sales negotiation. The three skills that we’ve discussed here will get you on your way to becoming a sales negotiating pro and will allow you to close better deals and close them quicker.

Winning Means Everything In Sports, In Sales Negotiations It Means Something Else...

What does it mean to “win” a sales negotiation? This sure looks like a simple question doesn’t it? I think that in our minds, we all know what we think winning looks like – after all, we see it in sports all the time. However, things are just a bit different when it comes to sales negotiations…

In sports, winning sometimes is achieved by a blowout - the football game that ends up 60 – 0, the no-hitter in baseball, etc. What’s interesting is that although these are clear victories for one team, the viewers get bored quickly and turn off the game – why bother if you already know who’s going to win. A lot of Superbowl games have been like this.

It turns out that sales good negotiations are a lot more like sports games that are too close to call right up until the last moment.

Dr. Chester Karrass goes about defining a sales negotiation winner as being someone who “.. understands what his or her objectives are and takes the time to achieve what is possible through the bargaining process.”

The interesting thing here is that “getting the lowest / highest price” is nowhere to be found in this definition – I think that that speaks volumes. During a sports competition, nobody spends any time worrying about what they can do to make a better deal for the other side. However, during a sales negotiation, this can be critical because you’re going to be dealing with the other side in the future and this negotiation is just the start.

Finally, one of the keys to being a successful sales negotiator is to make sure that the other side ends up being satisfied with the final deal that you reach. Unlike sports, it’s not over once the deal has been inked. The other side still needs to deliver on their promises and you want them to be happy to do so – not unhappy and looking for ways to cut corners in order to make back some of what they feel that they’ve lost!

Sales Negotiations With Japanese Partners Require New Skills

All too often Americans (like me) think that we know everything. The reality is that our society has only been around for a bit over 200 years and we’re just getting started. That’s why it can be valuable for a sales negotiator to take a look at how societies that have been around for 1,000′s of years negotiate. Like, say, Japan

The U.S. really started to take a look at how we dealt Japan in the 1980′s when trade between our countries exploded. What people quickly realized is that both sides of the table were fundamentally different. There for the first decade or so, U.S. sales negotiators were getting taken to the bank more often than not because the Japanese sales negotiators were doing a better job.

Over time HOW these negotiations were being conducted was closely studied. Three techniques quickly became apparent:

  1. Considered Response / Respectful Silence: when Japanese sales negotiators are on the other side of the table, be prepared to sit quietly. Western sales negotiators don’t know what to do when nobody is talking – and the Japanese know this. They can sit, work out math problems, draw in long breaths, etc. and say nothing for minutes at a time. This is all designed to get you to become flustered and give in on a point or say something that you shouldn’t say.
  2. KAN – “Seeking Heavenly Approval”: Western sales negotiators like to focus on the here and now. Japanese sales negotiators realize that this deal is just part of a much bigger relationship. After the details of the agreement have been worked out and it appears as though you are close to closing the deal, members of the Japanese team will pause. They will consider if they really want to do this deal with you – is it going to be worth it in the long run, or are you just going to be too much of a hassle to deal with? This moment is called KAN – reaching “heavenly approval”.
  3. Time & Money: the Japanese view the sales negotiation process differently than their Western partners do. We in the west see it as something to race through and quickly get done with. The Japanese view it as something to be nurtured. They set aside enough time to do it properly. They resist attempts to wrap it up quickly. They will revisit points over and over again in order to test your resolve. This is how Japanese sales negotiators turn time into money.

It is entirely possible to enter into sales negotiations with Japanese partners on the other side of the table and come out with an agreement that you feel good about. However, you need to fully understand how they see the world and adjust your sales negotiating style to this situation.

Successful Negotiating Requires Clear Goals

If only there was some magic formula for being a successful negotiator. You know what I’m talking about, some process that if you followed it from start to finish you could always be assured that you would “win” a negotiation. Well, as we’ve discussed in the past on this blog, the concept of winning a negotiation is a bit unclear. Rather we like to say that you want to come away from the negotiation feeling satisfied. Oh, and since a negotiation takes place between people who are infinitely complex and difficult to fully understand (yourself included), there is no way that any fixed formula is going to yield successful results every time. Rather, you need to be flexible and adapt your negotiating style to the current negotiation.

George Ross, who is Donald Trump’s master negotiator, has come up with seven goals for how you can better your odds of succeeding in almost any negotiating situation. Considering how successful George has been, it sure seems like it might be worth the time to listen to what he has to share with us. That being said, here are the seven goals that you can keep in mind in order to be a successful negotiator:

  1. I Want To Find Ways To Get More Out Of This Negotiation: The act of negotiating is a process of discovery for both sides. If you are able to distance yourself from narrowly focusing on just one point in the negotiation (price) and open your mind to all of the possibilities, then you will have a much better chance of being satisfied by the outcome of the negotiation.
  2. Learn, Learn, Lean (About The People On The Other Side Of The Table): Why are they there? What do they want? Almost without fail what you think are the answers to these questions turn out to be wrong. The only way that you are going to learn about the people who are sitting across from you is to start asking questions. Draw them out of themselves and who knows what valuable information will be revealed?
  3. Where Is The Bottom Line?: At the end of the day, this is the critical question that all negotiators need to find an answer to. The other side has a minimum amount that they MUST get out of the negotiations and you have a maximum amount that you are willing to give up as a part of the negotiation. George calls the gap between these two amounts the “zone of uncertainty”. Establishing the outline of this zone is what good negotiators do best.
  4. What Are The Constraints For This Deal?: You have constraints put on you, the other side has the same. These constraints can be limits on the amount of time that is available to negotiate, how much decision making authority each side has, etc. Discovering what constraints the other side is dealing with can help move you towards a deal much quicker.
  5. Connect With The Other Side: It is one of the great truths of life that we all like others who are most like us. What this means is that you need to find out as much about the other side of the table as quickly as you can. Once you have done this, you can start to interact with them in a way that they will most positively respond to.
  6. Understand The People Who Make Up Your Side Of The Table: Nobody negotiates alone. You have a collection of people on your side while you are negotiating. They may not be in the room with you; however, they are the ones whose support allows you to be there and they all have a stake in the outcome of the negotiations. They may not all agree with the posture that you are presenting to the other side of the table, but it’s your job to hid any internal differences and present a single unified face.
  7. Discover What Is “Fair And Reasonable”: This poor phrase has been so overused by both sides of the negotiating table that it can often be ignored. However, don’t do this. At the end of the day both sides of the table are searching for a deal that they believe is fair and reasonable. Unfortunately, we all define this slightly differently. Your job as a negotiator is to question and probe the other side of the table in order to find out how they define fair and reasonable. Then you will need to make sure that the deals that you propose to the other side meet this criteria so that they won’t be rejected.
